Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Vegetable Shortening solid
- 1/2 cup Butter or Margarine see Note below
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 4 cups Confectioners Sugar sifted, approx 1 lb
- 2 Tbl Milk

Instructions
- Cream Butter and Shortening with electric mixer.
- Add Vanilla.
- Gradually add Sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.
- When all sugar has been mixed in , icing will appear dry. Add Milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy.
Recipe Notes
Makes 3 cups.
Keep icing covered with a damp cloth until ready for use. Refrigerate when not in use. Keeps for up to 2 weeks in airtight container. Rewhip before using.
Wilton Buttercream Icing Variations:
For pure white icing and stiffer consistency, omit butter and add ½ cup All-Vegetable Shortening and ½ tsp Wilton Butter Extract.
To thin icing, add 2 tbl more Milk or Corn Syrup per recipe.
To stiffen, chill icing or add more Confectioners Sugar.
For chocolate icing, add ¾ cup unsweetened Chocolate or 3 1 oz melted unsweetened Chocolate squares plus 2 tbl Milk per recipe. Mix well.
